In 2001 I got a call stating that Clogs-N-More had an opening for me (Shannon), well they did and they didn't. Was I interested?

At the time my ego was still fragile from the rather abrupt ending of my previous shoe store job. (That is all I will say about that.) I wasn't sure if I wanted to get back into the world of shoes. Feet, really?

But then I met you, boss, and all worries were gone.

In the beginning you would hang out with me for a few hours at the store downtown, back when you just had two stores open. I loved those times. We'd laugh, sell some clogs, have a great time. I couldn't believe I GOT PAID to have that much fun.

Then you started not coming around as much. I knew it was because you trusted me, but I was sad because it meant not getting to hang out as much.

When I started working in the office more and more, we got to hang more and more and I got to really know who you are. I used to tell people that you are kindness personified, and I still stand by that statement.

Well, with a little inspiration I put pen to paper and came up with a new shelving system. Must say, I'm quite proud.

I'd like to send a shout out to the designers at Dansko.

Seriously. They perfected the comfort of that utilitarian style, the trusty Professional, years ago. (Most people are in love the first moment they slip one on) But it's taken a few attempts to get the high heel style to the *same level of comfort.

Meet Ryder. She looks like a bad ass, and quite honestly, she is. I mean, what high heels can you wear all day and not feel like your toes are being tortured? Answer: not many, if any...Ryder, she's got your back, as do all her sisters from the Rio Collection.

We ordered 18 cases of clogs to take to the 2011 Sock Summit that took place at the Oregon Convention Center July 28-31, 2011. We didn't go home with that many, that's for sure. What a blast (perhaps you got the hint we had fun in the previous post?). Thanks everyone for making it another successful event!

So, the recap:

I (Shannon) loaded in on Wednesday, it didn't take too long after Chas helped me get the cases there. As I was setting up, it was like seeing family I'd not seen in quite some time. There was a jovial buzz to the air. Everyone smiling with the anticipation of what was to come the next few days.

Yarn everywhere the eye could see. Gorgeous jewel tones, vibrant colors, all natural dyes. Being a knitter myself, it was like I had arrived home.

Thursday the marketplace was only open for two hours, but A and I had a busy two hours. Busiest two hours in a long time. It was great. We saw a large dent made in the stock we'd brought in just in that time alone.

Honestly, Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all a blur, but the whole weekend was fun fun fun and our friends from 2009's Sock Summit came by to see us and to peruse the shoes we brought this time (many of them gave homes to a pair...or two).

Liz from MacKintosh Yarns came by and borrowed some shoes to take a photo of her yarn, with the stunning sock design Freya by Lyykkenfanten (Ravelry link). Such a pretty combination of beautiful things, don't you agree?

Sadly, the shoes shown in the image are ones that Dansko has discontinued...but, new styles are starting to arrive and I am pretty sure that the new version of Rory (shown in picture) will float your boat, too.

On my way out I ran into Tina and asked if it was too soon to start talking about the 2013 Sock Summit. She just laid her head on my shoulder and whimpered a little bit. I never did see Stephanie for more than a quick blur as she darted from here to there...ah well, there is always next time (hopefully). :)

What can I say, it was a blast again, everyone! We were honored to be asked back to such a fabulous gathering of some pretty terrific humans. Thank you to Tina and Stephanie for taking it all on again with the help of many volunteers who made sure it all went smoothly. I understand the two years in between idea. It's got to take a lot of energy and time to organize such an amazing event. It went off without a hitch.

We were busy busy ladies at the booth (naturally not when the boss or our manager came by...always the case). :) Everyone was just happy and floating along in a bliss like state.

More to come later, I'm waiting for a photo to come in from one of the other vendors. A very talented dyer. She's driving back home so expect it sometime next week...

Meanwhile, I think this says it all.

In 2009 two brilliant and smart women (did I mention how pretty they are?!) had the brain child to gather knitters of all ages, races, genders to celebrate the art of sock knitting. All knitters were welcome, but there would be classes and meeting of famous sock knitters (yes, there are famous sock knitters among those of us who knit).

Anywho, they had a market place where vendors, such as ourselves, could sell their items. Most other vendors are yarn shops. We were the only shoe store. We had a blast.

If you are customer of Clogs-N-More, you should know that we offer a free cleaning on shoes purchased at any of our locations. However, did you realize that Mr. Lee (our Shoe Repairman Extraordinaire) could do other work on your clogs, besides just the cleaning?

Keep an eye on the heels of your clogs and if it gets close to the line (trust me, you can see a definite line of demarcation) bring your clogs in for new heels, at $20 for the pair.

You can also have stitching fixed, buckles, elastic, and velcro replaced. And much, much more. Bring your clogs in and we can tell you just what he can do!

Some of you may have seen the status update on Facebook wondering who the "she" is who's gone from Portland because today, today there is no sunshine. And according to the most amazing song ever (IMO) their "ain't no sunshine when she's gone." So, I ask again, who is she and can she come back to Portland?! We need the sun!!

Our toes need to be exposed (once properly tended to) and we need to soak up some Vitamin D STAT!!!

We did get a couple of teaser days and sandals came out of hiding, but only two days and then back to rain?!? What is up with that?! :)

Remember, that post about cost per wear? Well think of how long you'll have your sandals (that, let's face it, don't get worn as much in Portland)!!! You've got to come see what we have in!!

So many people have mentioned, in passing, that the clogs are rather expensive. While I agree this is true, the initial out of pocket expense is a bit more than what we'd like to pay, the cost-per-wear break down may help you take the plunge. (Also, the feeling they give your feet and body by the end of the day, makes the $$ 100% worth it for most people!)

Think about it. A pair of Dansko Professional clogs cost $120 (sizes 35-42). Say you have these clogs for five years, wearing them almost every single day. That would break down to $24 a year...OR $.07 a day. Granted sometimes, when wearing them in restaurant settings (back of the house, or front), they will wear faster. So we can do the calculation for two years. It would be...$120/2=$60; or $.16 a day.

Now, if you think about it that way, doesn't it help with that initial purchase price?! And take into consideration with clogs bought at our shops, we will clean them for free (as long as Mr. Lee is with us being our amazing Shoe Repairman). You can also get other work done on them, just bring them in so we can take a look and tell you what he can do to resuscitate them.

We have been slow to get real Spring weather in the Pacific Northwest. It's been chilly and rainy. Of course we do have the occasional sun break when we all run outside, or at least to the windows at work, and bask in its warm glow. But they have been fleeting, those sun breaks.

Since moving to Portland almost 11 years ago, I've heard many women say things like, "I don't like to buy sandals since I can only wear them three months of the year." My response to that?! At least we can wear them a few months out of each year. AND by not being able to wear them as long as people in other parts of the country (or world, really) we get to have our favorite sandals that much longer! Think about it, if they aren't on your feet every single day for 6 months, they don't get as worn, they last...makes sense, right?

My suggestion is to come try on the styles that sing your name and give one of them a home. They'll get to live with you for a long time!

I joke that my title at Clogs-N-More is "Girl of Many Hats and Too Many Clogs" but in all honesty, it's true.

This is where much of my work gets done. I am still trying to get my boss to buy me Photoshop so I can install it on this computer, as opposed to me using my personal laptop at home (which is so full of photos and things it's running like it's got molasses running through it.

My inspiration board makes me smile. Especially the little guy to the left of the "service & design" sign. :)

Anyway...hopefully more fun to come on this blog. I am anticipating some great things.

Back in April some friends and I met at North Bar in SE Portland (50th and Division). It was a perfectly wonderful day. The sun was out, there were probably even birds singing. I know I was happy to be sitting outside waiting for everyone to show up.

Today is a study in contrasts. Not so much sun out, the birds are probably primarily hiding from the rains. Today, I am sad to be wearing a sweater in June.

Of course, I could continue to complain and whine about the rain, but this is Portland in the Spring and it's Rose Festival. It always rains during the Rose Festival...

so i design the ads for my work. i really enjoy doing them. it's fun to be able to be creative again. the latest ad was in the willamette week cheap eats section that came out yesterday. inside of the front cover.

i got an email from the woman who works at our downtown store saying she'd had a woman come in today with the ad clipped out saying how cute the shoe was and that she had to try it on. buying it within a few minutes.

repair or replace?

I often get this question from customers: "When do I know when my clogs have had it?" My answer always stays the same. "When your body tells you so."

What do I mean by that statement? Well, it's easy really. If at the end of a long day your feet, legs, hips, body are a little achy, it's time. When you no longer slip into them and have that ahhhhhh moment. You know, like you're putting on slippers?

As soon as ehhhhhh happens, it's time.

But, if you are still finding your clogs comfortable after standing for a long day then I say repair anything you can. Check your heels. If you are past the little line along the bottom of the Danskos or Sanitas, it's time to get them redone. However, don't let it get too far past that line because there is a point of no return. Not sure, then bring them into any of our locations and we can tell you if you still have hope.

New heels start at $20 for clogs. Shines come free with any repairwork we end up doing. Unless you tell us you don't want them shined.

Now that the rain seems to have returned to the Pacific Northwest, we can return to our regularly scheduled program, already in progress.

We get many customers who are looking for waterproof shoes. While we don't have many that are deemed as such, we always joke that the clog has become the unofficial footwear of the Pac NW. With the higher soles keeping you up out of the puddles and the oily leather uppers of some the rain doesn't have a chance. The key is that you keep your clogs oiled and ready. Now, if you don't have an oily finished clog, that's okay. The other finishes (with the exception of perhaps the pull up leather from Dansko) are not porous so they won't absorb the rains.

Not sure what you have, bring your clogs in to get them spruced up by our cobbler, Mr. Lee. He will know exactly how to treat them right. (and no, it's not dinner and drinks) But be prepared to leave them behind. Usually it takes a week turn around, but more often than not he'll have things back a bit quicker than that.

We've recently updated our offices at Clogs-N-More. Making us a more efficiently run business (well, I am feeling more efficient and effective).

What does this mean for this blog? Well, my hopes are that I update it at least weekly, if not more often.

So, without further adieu...

We opened up our location at 617 NW 23rd. 97201 on August 13th. The people of that hood welcomed us with open arms. We thank you all for the support and the love!!

If you haven't gone in yet, you should check it out! We're getting things there weekly (as we're still trying to build out our inventory). This space has encouraged us to go ahead and do some changes at our downtown location. Paint is being applied to the walls and new racks installed, one section at a time.

We thank everyone for their patronage over the last 12 years. We couldn't have done it without you!!

eight years

it was just about eight years ago that i joined the clogs-n-more family. i'd been working at a different local shoe store (who is now out of business) when that job ended rather abruptly. i moped around, applied at other places, then i got a call from the former manager at the hawthorne location. they had a job, they didn't, but they did and did i want it? yes, no, yes?

when i started oh so long ago we had two locations. downtown and in southeast on hawthorne. i split my four work days between the two locations, always preferring downtown for the simple fact that the hawthorne store was slow. of course it is the busiest location now.

fast forward a few years and we're now 7 stores strong! five regular shops, an outlet, and a kids location. i'm in awe of my boss and his determination. he is a wise man, whom i've learned much from over the years.

was hoping to have some photos of the new store to share, but realized that i didn't have the camera the last time i was there finishing the set up. will have to rectify that today...

because, WE'RE OPEN!!

617 nw 23rd ave in portland...come see me. i'm hoping that i won't be bored and we'll be busy. fingers crossed, okay? currently we are thinking the hours should be sun-thurs 10-6 and thru the summer fri/sat 10-8. i honestly am thinking that 10-7 thru the summer will be late enough because a friend who worked at a store in the same block said that from 6-7 the only people who came in were waiting for their table at a nearby restaurant. so yeah, gots to talk with my boss about that.

We had the honor of being asked to attend the 2009 Sock Summit this weekend. Now, being a knitter myself, I was ecstatic. I mean who wouldn't want to work for four days surrounded by beautiful yarns and amazing people? My body aches and is tired, but all told, it was a blast. I met some lovely ladies and sold an unheard of number of clogs.

Thank you to the amazing sock knitting community for sharing in such an amazing event!!

Okay, so we don't really have high heeled sneakers, but for some reason Jose Feliciano is in my brain this morning. Perhaps it is because this is the first time in a long time I've felt like going out. After the oppressive heat wave we have had up in the Pacific NW it's finally feeling like it's breaking. It got down to the 60's overnight. Enough to bring some pep back to our steps this morning.

Perfect timing for the new fall styles that are arriving at our mall store today (and the other stores early next week).

Now, if I could only find my wig-hat and my red dress, I'd be in business...

I just returned home from a week long visit to Los Angeles where I got to meet my 8 week old nephew. A friend joked with my sister that she'd need to check my suitcase to make sure I wasn't trying to smuggle that baby out.

While there, my sister and I went through all his little tiny things to donate or hold onto if they ever have a second. She called out to me from his room, "do you know about baby shoes?!?" I told her that I did have some knowledge about what is good for kids, since I did get trained at the kids store.

When babies are little and tiny and not walking yet, Robeez are our go to shoes. They keep feet protected and safe. But they make for good first walkers, too. The suede soles give little feet the ability to feel the earth below them. This, in turn, allows their brains to really get all the information they need to know when learning how to walk. If you put your child in too stiff a shoe, the information isn't getting to their brains. And you have what I call a "Frankenbaby" because they walk stiffly and like Frankenstein.

When they get out in the world and you want a shoe with a bit more protective sole, See Kai Run makes some fabulous first walkers! The soles are pliable, the leather soft. Of course, if your baby is still doing a lot of crawling, the See Kai Run will show wear quickly, as the leather will start peeling. But if they are cruising around on their feet, you can't beat the SKR!!

I don't know if it's like this everywhere, but here in Portland as soon as the weather turns nice people get out! We take to the streets in droves. Walking, biking, unicycling, triking...but the interesting thing is, there are far fewer cars on the streets. This makes me smile, I must say.

When the weather is this nice out there, all I can think of is getting our big ol' diggity dog out on the hiking trails. Nothing makes her happier than that. I've been wearing the same hiking sandals for over five years now and am finding myself in the market for a new pair.

I am thinking of the Whisper, by Keen. She's a water friendly style that runs a little narrower than the regular Keen styles I've known and loved (lost weight everywhere...even in my feet!). The bungies go all the way down to the toes so it can be snugged up or loosened as need be. Pluse, the raspberry color is cu-ute!

I don't know if it was when I hit Publish Post or what but it warmed up again yesterday. I got home and instantly took off the jeans and clogs I was wearing and put on a skirt and sandals.

Say you have a foot that is a little on the wider side. Aaaand you are looking for a sweet sandal style you can wear for the various events you have happening in your life this summer.

How does this style grab you? With slight adjustabilty across the top and a smidge behind your heel, these could be just the ticket.

We're having a bit of a cool down here in the Pacific Northwest. Two weeks of sunshine and highs in the 80s turned into clouds and 60s. I'm not complaining, I like some free water for my garden. However, it can be tricky, figuring out what shoes to wear on days like we're having.

I tend to go for something like the little cutie up above. The cut out vine pattern makes them feel more summery, while the closed to gives you a little warmth for those chilly days.

I am often asked what it is about clogs that make them better than other shoes. While all feet are not created equal, most feet need arch support.

Clogs are quite possibly the most ergonomically correct footwear out on the market. They position your feet so that the toes are slightly lower than your heels, allowing the pressure and weight of your body to be evenly distributed.

When your weight is evenly distributed, you stand straighter, without having to shift your weight back and forth. Why do you think you see so many happy people walking around town wearing clogs? Because they have happy feet.

I was once told by my boss: the roll to the toe, the arch support, THAT is what makes a clog a clog. No other shoe out there has the natural feeling that allows your feet to be feet.

The past two days of weather here in the Pacific Northwest has been a wild ride. Seemingly beautiful days turn dark as the wind whips and the rain pelts. While it is an awesome sight to behold, it makes us all wonder when we're going to be able to wear our sandals, skirts, shorts, tank tops...anything other than long sleeves and pants.

I swear, it's on the way. And don't you want to be prepared? I know I do!

So, go through the wardrobe now and figure out what shoes you are missing for this summer. Come in and shop uninterrupted. With fewer people out on the streets, shopping is more fun! :) At least that's how I like to shop, without the crowds of people.

Well, it's like Dansko had done that for me and I'd just forgotten.

Years ago I had a pair of Marcelles that I wore into the ground. I should have replaced same for same, but thought I'd try other styles out.

Yeah, the Marcelle is for me! Goes with skirts, jeans, dressier pants, everything!!

These are a dark cordovan color. Perfect for the person wanting to break out of their black or brown shoe habit. The gateway color, I like to say.

I am sitting behind the counter at our shop on Hawthorne watching people enjoying the great sunny day we have been dealt. It wasn't supposed to be so shiny and lovely out, but then again, we do live in Portland and it is springtime.

It's been a sandal kind of day with many leaving on their next great adventure. Styles like Kayenta from Teva. It's the perfect sandal for everyday walking. Lightweight, not too much going on on top, water friendly. Trust me, I wore mine in the swimmin' hole last summer while visiting my mother-in-law. They were fabu!!

We've got three colors this year, pesto (green and brown), chocolate chip (brown and yellow), as well as walnut (pink and taupe). I've been trying to upload the photo, but this computer isn't cooperating. Perhaps I will get to do it this evening.

Meanwhile, as this day progresses, enjoy the sunshine, be kind to one another, and if you are in the Hawthorne neighborhood, come by and see me. I'll be here until 7:00!

Well, Spring has Sprung in Portland. However, in many places this means warmer weather with those springtime showers. We've just been getting the showers without the warm up.

These are the latest shoe I am coveting. Perhaps not in the lilac color, but the style is really comfortable on the foot. From the front it's a simple sandal, but when you walk away...you leave them with a little something special.

I try them on almost every single time I work. I imagine them with the dress I am knitting (call me crazy) to wear to weddings this spring. The brown would be the perfect pair for the dress (if it gets done, which it totally will!!). Now, how to justify them to the husband...

When the rains return to the Pacific Northwest it is our instinct to stay inside, avoiding the world out there. However, to keep our sanity it is important to get out! Go do! Be alive!

I joke with customers that clogs are the unofficial shoe of our region for the simple reason that they keep us up out of the puddles. The thick soles, which house the amazing arch support many have become addicted to, are perfect for keeping our tootsies dry in this weather.

Each Winter, right around the changing of the clocks, we get some beautiful weather. Warmish, sunny, dry. And just when we think to ourselves, "wow, is it really here already?!?!" the rains come back and slap us across our collective faces and send us back into hiding once more.

But I say, get out! Don't hide! Put on your favorite clogs and jump in puddles (although if you do jump, I can't promise your feet won't get wet).

It really does keep getting harder to come to work. You know why? Well, because we keep getting fabulous styles in that taunt me and tease me and make me want to put them on my feet and keep walking for days.

These Romika sandals are my current obsession. Seriously people! I can't wear heels since my wedding (for three days after, my toes were numb). But when I slipped into these little beauties this morning, I almost fell over they were so comfortable. And yes, normally in the first few minutes I will know if my toes are going to rebel.

Please remind me I have far too many shoes...please?

Driving into work one day I received a text message from one of the employees saying,

"seriously? are you trying to make me a shoe whore?!?"

When I got into the store, I could see why she'd ask that question...

I know that what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay there, but we saw some great looking shoes from our vendors for Fall 09. The boots, ladies can I tell you?! So cute. And stylish. And comfortable. (well, the two who could fit into them reported back to the rest of us) The vendors have all really tightened up their lines. Nothing extraneous, but nothing felt left out.

Would you pay around $100 for a pair of grey suede knee high boots? Cuz I sure would! I won't say who, nor will I go beyond saying anything other than what I have already, but DAMN! So cute!!

Work regains and we all shift back into our "normal" lives at the retail stores and office.

Trust me, as I can share, I will!

Every six months we get to travel to Las Vegas to view the upcoming seasons styles. It has to be one of my most favorite parts of my job. The hustle and bustle of the event gets me energized.

We've already seen a few lines, Dansko, Sanita, Josef Seibel, Romika...and are excited about what they are offering for Fall 09.

Of course, we have sandal season to get through first. Speaking of which, some cutie patootie styles are rolling in each day. Just got some Merrells in that just call my name.

I know, this is a clog blog, but a clog company made these...

A new series from Dansko, the company people have come to adore. There are even fan clubs!

The Capri series offers a lightweight construction with a nylon shank built in for additional support. A Polyurethane outsole and an EVA insert at the toes provides cushion. The leather sock-lining is soft under foot.

This is just one of the three styles we opted to buy this year. We think they are going to be a huge success. They are more supportive than the average flat sandal out there. Pair that with the quality you've come to expect from Dansko and you've got a match made in heaven.

Keen has come out with an innovative style called Harvest Mary Jane. They are running a little long, so if you are ordering them anywhere, I'd suggest the half size smaller than your regular size. Cute, no?

The woven material is rice bags so the color will vary between pairs, sometimes within the pair they are a smidge different, but that's part of their charm and coolness.

If you are one of those matchy matchy kind of gals, they also have a large tote bag made from the woven rice bags, too (we've got a few bags left at our Westmoreland store, but only sell Keen shoes at our Hawthorne location at this time).

Don't hesitate, these are sure to be a big hit and be gone before we know it!!

The sunshine and lovely temperature made me want to get out and take the dog on a walk with my husband. It was crisp by the end of it, as the sun was starting to set. I decided on this walk that I would indeed take a second pair of shoes to Vegas for the WSA shoe show.

My Teva Westwaters won. They are comfortable, they are lightweight, they are compact (as compact as a size 10 shoe can be), and they are cute to boot.

We've gotten some in and I wouldn't wait because last year, they sold out completely...and we couldn't get more.

Everyone needs that fancy pair of "holiday" shoes to wear to the various events that we all endure around this time of the year. This year, wouldn't it be great to have a comfortable pair of "holiday" shoes?!

I think so, so meet Tara from Dansko. She's a heel, yes, but she's got arch support and is a bit of a platform, giving the ball of your foot more cushion than the average heel out there.

Or, if your surrounded by fun loving people and don't have to wear heels, but still want something that is cute and fun and comfortable, try the clog you have grown to love in a fantastic color!

One of the 7 deadly sins, Lust is my most favorite. I mean, when it comes to shoes.

I lust after these:

The brand is Sergio Tomani. They are new to us. They use natural dyes, are hand-crafted, and works of art.

I keep telling myself that I have boots that I love and adore and wear a lot. These would not be filling any voids in my already overflowing closet. These are truly beautiful, but that is not justification enough for them to come home and live with me.

I just looooove them and lust after them...we'll see if at the end of the season we have any left in my size. If so, that may just be the "sign" that they were destined to be mine.

We're starting to get over-run by Fall/Winter 08 styles! It's always the most fun time of year, when we start having to switch over product and find space for new styles that we seem to get delivered almost every single day. It's like I get to play real time tetris. I love real time tetris!

When the temps in the morning start at around 60F, people are wanting to cover their toes. I can't say that I blame them, considering I am sitting at my desk right now wearing an alpaca sweater I made last year. I'm all about the warm right now. And you know what? There are some very very cute styles to choose from. Too many, some customers say.

When in Vegas for the last WSA (World Shoe Association) we met the owner of J-41. We stopped by the booth the next day and liked what we saw. Something different, something new, something that falls into the category of comfort yet something that still has oodles of style.

We instantly knew it would be a successful move to bring them into our stores.

We're currently just beginning to get things in and let me tell you, there are some great styles.

Take Sally, for instance. On the newest clog sole from Dansko, you get support, cushion, and best of all, style. The detail on the toe box is slight, but very traditional. This style looks great with jeans, skirts, dresses, anything.

Sometimes it's hard to get out of bed in the morning. Especially when the day that lies ahead is going to be gorgeous and amazing and you have to head into work. It's days like those (well, these since today is absolutely that kind of day) that you can feel like your on vacation by the choice of shoes you put on your feet.

Personally, I tend to go with open toed sandals that have been on several vacations already so I can remember the time I was walking on the beach in beautiful Mexico. Or clogs I wore to walk my cousin's beast of a dog (with her asking "Are you really going to wear your clogs? He's going to pull you over!"- which he did NOT, btw). Or sometimes I bring my slippers into the office, if I know I am going to be stuck behind the desk for a long time.

Today was almost one of those slipper days, but I've got plans after work so I realized I probably needed to not load myself down (plus they wouldn't fit into the bag I packed today).

So, what shoes do you wear when you have to go to work and you really are wanting to play hooky?

I don't know about the rest of the country, but we just aren't getting a "real" spring here. It's been cold and wet with hints of gorgeous every few days. Of course we are all ready to wear sandals and expose those toes, but those toes just shrink back, chilled.

So, what do you wear during this transitional phase of weather? Mary Janes!

They give you a little bit of exposure, with just the right amount of coverage. You don't have to worry about painting those piggies for a little bit longer. Paired with a skirt or jeans, the Mary Jane is the perfect transitional style.

really, how many months?

I won't apologize for not blogging. I mean honestly, I haven't been writing at my regularly scheduled blog either. With the sun shining there are so many things to do in the great out of doors. So, that's where I've been. Up to my eyeballs in mulch, until I was only ankle deep after spreading it all over our yard.

Anyway, fun fact:

We now sell Keen at our Hawthorne location. Yes, you read correctly, KEEN! My pair is the most comfortable pair of shoes in my closet right now. It seems as though I was beginning to develop a bunion on my left foot. No fun, let me tells you! I got my pair of Keens and haven't looked back. Sure, I still wear my clogs and my favorite boots, but my Keens have become my go to style.

You'll have to come into the store to check them out, since I don't have them listed on our site (not sure what Keen as a company says about internet sales, etc). Even worse, I don't have a photo that wants to be loaded correctly. The coloring is all goofy and wrong...

In other news...

The rains are back. We had that yearly teaser of sunny weather (granted sunny did not mean warm) and today we are getting hit with cold rain. It may be cold enough to freeze later, we'll have to wait and see.

But you know what will keep those toes warm during this cold? Smartwool socks in combination with Haflinger slippers.

I know, I know, I've made that statement before. But it's true. I disliked socks for the longest time (ask my husband who used to be the person I shoved them under to warm them). Then I got a pair of Smartwool just to see what all the talk was about. Now, I'm a pusher of socks. It's funny. I used to warn people that the clogs we sell are addictive (which is still true) but now I've added Smartwool to that warning.

Haflingers are amazing. They are slippers that form to the contours of your feet. Yes, that is right, slippers that have arch support! Boiled wool uppers with your choice of indoor soles and soles you can wear to take the dog out, run the recycling to the curb, etc. We are showing the Grizzlies at the site. They have cork and latex footbeds that are much like a Birkenstock, although with a bit more latex they are easier for you to wear from the get go.

Personally, my indoor slippers are my favorite things I put on when I get home (besides the yoga/lounge pants). They wait by my door so I can enter, take off my clogs and slip them on immediately. I'm in the process of finding a pair for my husband as his old slippers have seen better days. Oh, I forgot to say about the indoor ones...they are washable. Throw them in on gentle/cold and air dry. They will snug back up and feel like new again.

meet westmoreland

Welcome to Westmoreland (not to be confused with Sellwood, which is not very far from here). It's a great part of Portland, full of local businesses and warm people. When we got offered this space we knew before we even saw it that we wanted it. Who wouldn't want to be situated in the heart of a great community?!

It's our largest store. Chock full of cloggy goodness.

The walls are lined with various brands of clogs. Dansko, Troentorp (formerly Bastad), Sven, El Naturalista, with a few Josef Seibels and Merrells as well.

One of my favorite things about this particular location are the customers. They are amazing; with the one exception being the girl who stole a pair of shoes yesterday...but I believe in Karma.
The sales staff we have at this location is also one of the best groups of women. All are upbeat, happy, excited to be here and love working with customers. I can't say how thrilled I am to come in to see how neat and tidy the store is. I love working the floor here because when customers come in, they'll talk about the three who work here and how much they enjoy their outlooks.

The energy of the staff dictates how the day is going to go, most days. Every once in a while we have people who come in and are upset and they've already decided that they won't be made happy no matter what. So we allow them to be unhappy because it is their choice. What we do try to do is show them that the world isn't all bad. We hope that our pep wears off on them.

But then again, that's how I live my life. If I can bring a smile to someone else's face, I've succeeded.

don't go changing

There is a saying that goes something like: "the only thing you can always count on is change"

We're getting ready to move. The website, not the store. Mine eyes are hurting and tired and twitchy. My patience is nearing its limit.

On the 14th clogsnmore.com should have a completely different look and feeling. If it all goes according to plan, it will be rad. Keep those fingers crossed that it all goes according to plan.

So it's getting icy and cold here in the Pacific Northwest. One might even say we're having *gasp* winter. I suppose it being December 31st and all, it's not out of the ordinary.

The question is then, what to wear on your feet during these cold times? Sure there are those things called Uggs, but really?

Why not wear Smartwool socks with your favorite clogs? I mean think about it. The socks are amazing with qualities that make my head swoon (like the fact that the sweat from your feet gets turned into a vapor so your sock isn't a soppy mess). When paired with your favorite clogs, be them Dansko, Sanita, Troentorp, Sven, Haflinger... perfection.

People worry about slipping in their clogs on the ice. If you're going to slip, you are going to slip. My suggestion is to take your time. Don't rush. Give yourself the extra time you need. But when walking, walk with conviction. Don't walk with tentative steps. It's then that you end up slipping and falling on your booty. And nobody likes to fall on their booty.

So as 2007 draws to an end, remember those you love. Remember the things about your life you adore. And change those things you don't. You have the power to make it happen. You hold the key to alter the life you have in the direction you want it to go. Put those good things out in the universe and she will reward you ten fold.

And honestly, go into the new year with feet that aren't screaming four letter words at you for wearing those pointy, horrible for your feet, heels.

another day, another pair of shoes

Why is it women (and some men, but mainly women) have a love affair with shoes? I mean, I enjoy them and know that over the many years of selling them I have amassed a few pairs. However, I was the girl who owned four pairs through college. A pair of sneakers, a pair of sandals, a pair of...I can't even remember at this time (yeah, it's been a while since college). There are times (mainly in the morning when I'm picking out what to wear) when I long for those days of simpler times. Then again, I love my collection of clogs, boots, sandals, slides...

So what is it for you? Why do you love shoes so much?

I think what I've come to determine for myself is that they allow me to really be myself. Clothing allows that too, but pair an outfit with the right pair of shoes and all is right. Superficial? Maybe. But at least the shoes I tend to wear (with the exception of the pointy toed, heeled boots I wore the other night) are all good for my body. I don't normally stuff my feet into those points, but hey, I'm a woman and I like to be stylish sometimes (not saying clogs are not stylish cuz here in the Pac NW they totally are!).

Leave a comment with your favorite shoes that are in current rotation, or a pair that you long to find again.

Personally, give me my El Naturalista boots and I'm a happy girl...They go with dresses, skirts, pants, jeans. They are comfortable for all day of walking and standing. They fit my leg perfectly (which I was scared of because I bought them without being able to try them on...yeah, I live life on the edge). They are mid-calf and show the ink off nicely (my tattoo on my right calf). They are now on their second winter season and have hardly any wear showing on the soles. Often in the stores we get asked if we have any vegan shoes. It used to be the answer was always no, other than our rubber garden clogs. Well, the times are a changing. Simple has brought out their Green Toe line. Not only are they made 100% animal product free, but also with recycled materials to boot! Both comfortable AND cute!

We carry a few styles for both men and women at most locations (excluding Tanasbourne and the Outlet). Unfortunately I can't list them at our site because the styles change so quickly (and we sell out) that I can't keep up.

It's November 25th. In theory we should be knee deep in puddles here in the Pacific Northwest, but here we are having sun.

So you may wonder if you should still want those beautiful boots you saw in the window the other day. Yes, yes you do. And may I tell you why?

It may be sunny, but that sun, is NOT making the world a warmer place here. To wear a boot under a pair of jeans/cords/dress pants means another layer of warmth. I can't tell you how much wear I get out of my favorite boots from last year. I wear them almost every single day. Of course the bossman keeps telling me I have to wear things we sell (even though we sell the brand...we don't sell the style of boots). So maybe I should heed my own words and buy the boots.

Tis the season for the holiday shopping frenzy. There is a buzz out there. Not full blown panic, yet. Keep in mind, kids, we offer gift certificates. So if you don't know what your loved one wants, or what size clog they wear...and trust me when I tell you that if you tell us how tall they are, we can't guess their shoe size.

Of course some people love to have an actual box to give. And you know what, we have those too! We can box up your gift certificate, you add a rock to give it a bit of heft before you wrap it and viola, they think they are getting a pair of clogs.

The real joy of the gift certificate? It fits EVERYONE! You don't have to worry about getting something that they may not really like (and then they don't want to hurt your feelings by exchanging it). They get to pick out the clogs. It's really a win-win situation.

In todays market retailers must think about the companies with whom they do business. With added pressure to carry products that are earth friendly, we feel strongly that the choices we have made will show our customers that we do just that. We think and care about our earth.

Teva (pronounced 'teh-vah') came onto the scene years ago. Known for their outdoors-y shoes (mainly for water sports) they realized they needed to expand on that niche. But how to do it without putting more waste into the world?

Introducing their "Curbside Collection" is how. Made with post consumer recycled rubber outsoles and full grain leather uppers. They have taken style and taken it one step closer to green.

We do have an outlet location where the styles that are not being taken forward to the next season go to find homes. Things are marked down nicely, although not many Dansko Professionals get there. There were some plum suede there a little bit ago, but I'm not sure if there still are.

Sorry that this post is lacking, but wanted to answer Mama's question! Oh, and no, the outlet does not count towards your Clog Club Card. That is full price items only.

Go see the girls at the outlet though, tell them the blog sent you. ;)

Remember that whole life taking over post from a couple of months ago? Well who knew it then, but it was real!

We've gotten more fall things in the store. I've had zero time to get photos though, or even post things here. I will hopefully get that taken care of sooner than later.

When life hands you lemons, what's the saying? Make a gin and tonic? :)

Meanwhile, hang in there (if there is anyone to read those words) I will post something of substance in the future (again, hopefully in the near future).

One of the questions I get often is what Danskos run narrower. They only have one style in particular that is deemed narrow, however they've got a new line out that is actually fitting narrower feet really well. It's called the Charlestown series.

Meet Diana:

She's got a removable footbed (great for those women who need to wear orthotics). She's got beautiful vegetable tanned leather. She's fitting narrower feet like a dream. We have her in teal (shown), black, pomegranate, and russet (brown). Teal has to be my favorite of the four colors.

I know that the posting has been lacking here. I am shooting for a once a week update. Keep those fingers crossed I make it happen and keep checking back!

when life takes over

We all are busy. We don't allow ourselves time to sit and relax. We have to pick up the kids at school. We need to get to the store to get things for dinner. We must work work work in order to live the life we desire.

Well, when life gets too busy, we need to all stop and realize that if we keep going at the pace we are, we aren't going to be around to enjoy it.

So, stop right now. Take a breath. Decide what shoes you want to take on your vacation. Yes, I said VACATION. Plan a trip. Surprise your family, or your friends. It could be something as wild as flying to Europe to see all you have ever imagined or keeping it close to home and just going to see the wonders that are right in your own back yard.

Whatever you do though, you need to plan accordingly. What to take. My suggestion, don't buy your shoes the days before your trip. You need to have enough time to get used to them, to see where they will rub, to allow the leather to stretch and become soft. And if you do decide to buy shoes right before you get on that plane or in your car...take Band Aids. Seriously, plan ahead. I'm not saying that every new shoe will give you a blister or a hot spot. However, isn't a vacation supposed to be fun? Sometimes even our old favorite shoes will do naughty things to our feet if we are wearing and walking more than normal in them. Again, take a few Band Aids.

Also, if you can manage, my suggestion is to take as few shoes as possible. They are heavy in your bags AND they take up space you could use for those treasures you find while traveling. So, instead of packing four pairs for all the different things you could possibly do (walking shoes, dancing shoes, sandals, and flip flops) find two pairs that will do the jobs of all four (or more).

So start planning. You will be happy you decided to.

I once had a customer (one of my absolute favorite customers) send me a list of rights and wrongs for summer toes and wearing sandals. I remember it had me rolling. I remember there was something about "never wear open toed shoes with your sad, winter toes sticking out." For some reason this always makes me laugh. I have done it, I will admit. I don't go in for professional pedicures often (try my wedding seven years ago and for a fund raiser last summer). However I will paint those piggies because even though I don't care for my toes (really what woman does) I figure if I make them prettier with color people won't care that they are as long as my fingers (I once had a friend tell me I have "freakishly long toes" and yes, we are still friends).

So get thyself a pedicure and shoe those toes!

Yeah so with summertime comes things that make me more and more raccoon like (sunshine, watching the guys paint my eaves, getting my house ready to sell). Shiny things distract me and all the aforementioned things are super shiny in my world.

Anyway, I said I'd let you know when the Midori was up at our site and guess what, she is! Also new is the Caitlin, both are listed in the Dansko Shoes and Boots section.

Sandals are flying out of the stores so if you see something you can't live without...buy it now!

The fall shoes have started to arrive. I know, a bit weird since we are now finally seeing warmer weather (at least here in Portland). But the world of retail works this way. Every season starts six months, at least, before the calendar tells us it's time.

This is just a hint of the beauty to come. Midori is her name. *Pomegranate is her color. Comfort is how she rolls. The series this style is part of is called Golden Gate. It is one of the most cushioned soles you will find in a Dansko AND it's got amazing arch support.

Just wait and see what else comes our way! The Midori will soon be on sale at our site. I'll let you know when.

Today we will discuss an amazing company called El Naturalista. We've only carried the brand for about a year and a half now but let me tell you...they are a brand to try out!

The very first style we ever tried from them was called Iggdrasil NO96. We've taken to calling it Snail. The soles are made from recycled rubber and infused with tea tree oil. The recycled rubber used is gotten from either leftover or re- utilized materials. The current recycling technologies allow for the highest quality rubber to be made, using what otherwise would be classified as industrial waste. Who wouldn't want to wear these environmentally-friendly clogs?

The leathers used in making all El Naturalistas shoes are carefully dyed by hand with natural dyes. The uppers are then hand stitched with love and care. When you look at a pair of their shoes, you can see the passion that went into creating them.

So at the store we have recently gotten in a slew of socks from both SmartWool and Hot Sox. Both companies are great and have fun styles, but SmartWool has an almost cult like following. I often will warn people when they purchase their first pair of Danskos that they become addictive, but really what is better to be addicted to healthy shoes or crack? They always laugh.

I got my first pair of SmartWool socks this past winter, when we first started carrying the brand. I like to experience things that we sell so I can pass along information to my customers. I have to tell you, SmartWools have earned that cult like following for a reason. My SmartWool's are the first to be dirty after every single time I do laundry. I'm forced to tell people that they are as addictive as Danskos are. People laugh, but they always come back for more.

So you might look at the price of the socks and think, "MAN! Those are some crazy expensive socks!" And you are right, however, they are worth every single penny. Another concern I hear from customers is the itch factor. Wool=itch in their minds...but it's not so with SmartWool.

We still carry several of the novelty socks for which Hot Sox is known.

(funny story, the other employees gave me so much crap about the lime green socks with western dogs in hats and neckerchiefs and the pirate cats. Can you guess what sold out first?)

With the weather warming up I am starting to think about pedicures, open toe sandals, and letting myself relax. Sandals have arrived at the stores and I couldn't be more excited. Fun, flirty styles with amazing attention to details will make this spring and summer season exciting.

The fabric upper is lined with a soft leather to keep those feet happy. The arch support is the closest to the support in the original clogs from Dansko. So the idea of starting a work place blog came to me this morning as I was posting at my own personal space about the opening of Clogs-N-More's newest addition to the family.

So, welcome to Clogs-N-More! My boss opened the doors to our location downtown eleven years ago. It was his mission to bring the best quality and most comfortable footwear to the people of Portland, Oregon.

The general concept of this blog is to alert people/customers to upcoming events, new styles that we are getting in, and just sharing what is Clogs-N-More with the rest of the world. I will try to post often, but we'll see how it goes.
